HOW TO AVOID WORKPLACE RETALIATION CLAIMS
Before any workplace termination occurs, it is important to consider if the subject employee has expressed recent concerns about unlawful or wrongful conduct on the part of the employer or any of its supervisors.
This is because these and similar complaints frequently form the basis of wrongful termination/unlawful retaliation suits, which typically allege, "Shortly after I complained of unsafe conditions, or (workplace harrassment, or unpaid overtime work, etc.) I was fired."
These and other "checklist" issues must be fully explored before any discharge, as a means of avoiding liability exposure.
This ongoing seminar series is being conducted by veteran Petaluma labor & employment attorney, Jay Putnam. Putnam, has advised employers exclusively, in labor matters for over 36 years. He hopes to provide local business owners and managers with a solid, working understanding of California labor law, as a means of helping them avoid the often crippling cost and disruption caused by lawsuits resulting from a misunderstanding of applicable legal requirements.
Members are encouraged to bring their questions. Putnam says he intends to conduct the seminars as "informal, working sessions, where lunch is provided, their questions are answered and they leave each month with important information that will immediately improve their business operations.
